“The kids and I are finalizing the flight details for Hawaii,” Richard said, tossing his keys onto the marble countertop.
“Valerie wants them there a week early to help with the beach setup.”
He was marrying her in Maui next month.
Our children, Dylan and Chloe, had already been bought off with promises of surfing lessons and first-class tickets.
“A week early,” I repeated, keeping my voice neutral.
“Yes, so you’ll have plenty of time to pack up your personal things,” Richard said, turning to face me with a patronizing smile.
“I want the house empty and clean by the time we get back from the honeymoon.”
He walked toward his study, pausing at the doorway.
“I’ll have my lawyer send over the final movers’ schedule,” he added.
He closed the door, leaving me alone in the open-concept kitchen.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Nathan Cole’s number.
“Nathan,” I said when he answered. “How soon can you secure the flatbed trailers?”
