My hands were steady on the steering wheel, but my chest felt tight.

The reality of what I had done was beginning to sink in.

My phone buzzed in the cup holder.

The caller ID showed Gloria Vance’s office number.

I pressed the speaker button on the dashboard.

“Alexandra,” Gloria said.

“He’s seen it,” I said.

“He’s furious.”

“He threatened to sue for the land.”

Gloria let out a dry chuckle.

“Let him try,” she said.

“I’ve just received the preliminary audit of your joint accounts.”

“Richard made a major mistake before he left for Hawaii.”

“What did he do?” I asked.

“He transferred four hundred thousand dollars out of the agency’s operating account to pay for the trip and Valerie’s ring,” Gloria said.

“But because of the way the corporate charter is written, he needed your signature for any transfer over fifty thousand.”

“He forged your name on the authorization form, Alexandra.”

“We have the bank records.”

I felt a cold sensation in my stomach.

“Is that enough to stop him?” I asked.

“It’s enough to put him in federal court for bank fraud if he doesn’t cooperate,” Gloria said.
