“But the land is yours, protected by your father’s trust.”

“By removing the house, we are satisfying the outstanding debt on the structure and restoring your sole property.”

“It is entirely legal, Alexandra. But it is aggressive.”

“I like aggressive,” I had told her.

By Wednesday evening, the master bedroom was gone.

The space where I had spent twenty years feeling invisible was now just an empty patch of gravel.

The only thing left of the multi-million-dollar home was the concrete support piers.

They stuck out of the ground like broken teeth.

Thursday was the day of the earth.

The heavy excavator arrived at dawn.

Its metal tracks tore into the driveway, breaking up the asphalt.

The operator used the massive steel bucket to pry the concrete piers out of the soil.

Each pier was loaded into a dump truck to be hauled to a recycling yard.

By three in the afternoon, the ground was flat.

Nathan’s crew brought in three truckloads of dark, rich topsoil.

They spread it evenly over the red clay, smoothing out the scars left by the machinery.
