The wet, cold air rushed in, smelling of jet fuel, wet asphalt, and ozone.
“Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Carter,” the officer said, tipping his hat.
“Is she secured?” Richard asked.
“Yes, sir. State police intercepted her right at the hangar doors,” the officer replied.
He wiped water from his forehead with the back of his glove.
“We’re booking her on grand larceny, embezzlement of the family trust, and child endangerment.”
Hearing those words aloud made something untie deep in my chest.
Grand larceny.
Embezzlement.
And child endangerment—for what she had done to my daughters, Olivia, Grace, and Lily.
“Is there any chance of bail?” I asked, my voice cracking.
The officer shook his head.
“Given the flight risk and the severity of the financial fraud, the judge is holding her without bond for the night.”
“Thank you, Officer,” I said.
“We’ll need you to come to the precinct tomorrow morning to sign the formal statements,” he said.
I nodded, unable to speak further.
He walked back to his cruiser, where Margaret was being pushed into the back seat.
