“The state police already have the warrant,” Nora’s voice came through, clear and urgent. “I’ll dispatch them to Westchester County Airport immediately. They can block her jet.”

“We’re right behind her,” Richard said.

He turned to me. “Stay here, Emily. It’s not safe.”

“No,” I said, my voice firmer than I felt. “I’m coming with you. She has my children’s future in her hands. I need to see this through.”

He looked into my eyes for a long moment, searching for any sign of hesitation.

He found none.

“Let’s go,” he said.

He called out to Mrs. Alvarez, who was hovering near the kitchen doorway, her face pale.

“Lock all the doors,” Richard told her. “Keep the girls in the playroom. Don’t open for anyone.”

“I understand, Mr. Bennett,” she said, nodding quickly. “Go. God bless you.”

We ran out to Richard’s SUV, the cold rain starting to fall in heavy, scattered drops.

The leather seats were freezing as I climbed in.

Richard started the engine, the vehicle roaring to life with a deep vibration.

He shifted into drive and we sped down the driveway, the tires gripping the wet asphalt.
