“Every single one?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
“Every account,” Nora said. “Including Margaret’s personal discretionary funds that are drawn from the foundation’s trust.”
Richard let out a low breath and checked his watch.
“The local news will have it within thirty minutes,” he said. “The courts publish these orders publicly.”
He was right.
By four o’clock, the television in the corner of the study was tuned to a Connecticut news channel.
A reporter was standing in the rain outside the Hartford probate court.
“Breaking news this afternoon in the wealthy enclave of Greenwich,” the reporter said, holding her microphone close. “A federal judge has issued an emergency order freezing the assets of the multi-million-dollar Whitmore Foundation.”
The screen cut to a file photo of Margaret, looking regal and untouchable at a recent charity gala.
“The order comes amid allegations of grand larceny, fraud, and the systematic diversion of estate funds meant for the widow and children of the late John Whitmore,” the reporter continued.
My hands began to shake again, but this time it was not from fear.
