“This is criminal,” Richard said.

His voice was low, but it held a sharp, dangerous edge.

“It is grand larceny, forgery, and fraud,” Nora agreed. “They didn’t just take your home, Emily. They stole your entire life.”

“But why?” I sobbed, covering my face with my hands. “Why would she do that to her own son’s family? She has millions of her own.”

“It isn’t just about the money,” Richard said softly.

I felt his hand gently touch my shoulder.

“It’s about control,” Richard said. “If you had four million dollars and a townhouse in Brooklyn, you wouldn’t need her. You would have left Greenwich. She wanted to keep you under her thumb.”

I cried silently, the weight of the past two years crushing down on me.

All the nights I had stayed awake wondering how I would pay for the girls’ dental work.

All the times I had swallowed my pride while Margaret called me a parasite in front of my children.

It had all been a lie.

“They used the stolen trust money to fund Margaret’s charity projects,” Nora said, her eyes fixed on the screen. “Look at the transfer history.”
