The Inheritance of Gray Eyes and the Fall of the Vale Empire
“We need to hide the children,” I said, my heart rising into my throat.
“There is a safe room,” Isabella said, pointing toward the back of the warehouse.
Behind a stack of rusted iron pipes, there was a heavy steel door painted the same gray as the wall.
“It has its own air supply,” she said. “It’s reinforced with six inches of steel.”
“Get them in there,” Adrian said to me.
I knelt by the mattress, my hands trembling as I reached for Lena first.
She was warm and heavy with sleep, her thumb still tucked near her mouth.
“Maya,” Adrian said, kneeling beside me to pick up Oliver.
We moved quickly, keeping our voices to a whisper.
Noah woke up as I lifted him, his small hands clutching at my collar.
“Mama?” he murmured, his eyes blinking in the dim light of the computer screen.
“Shh, baby,” I whispered against his hair. “We’re going to play a game. You have to be very quiet.”
He nodded sleepily, burying his face in my neck.
Isabella led the way, holding a small flashlight with her thumb over the lens to dim the beam.
