He slipped the phone back into his coat pocket.

Camille stared at him, her chest rising and falling beneath her tailored wool coat.

“Adrian,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “Think about what you are doing.”

“I am thinking,” Adrian said.

He reached down and unclasped the silver watch on his left wrist, the one Salvatore had given him for his twenty-fifth birthday.

He dropped it onto the concrete bench beside her.

“The engagement is over,” Adrian said.

Camille looked down at the watch, then back up at him, her eyes narrowing.

“You cannot just walk away from this,” she said. “Your grandfather will not allow it.”

“He doesn’t own me,” Adrian said.

“He owns everything,” Camille hissed, stepping closer to him. “He owns this city, Adrian. Where do you think you can go with her?”

She pointed a manicured finger at me.

I pulled Oliver closer to my side, my hand gripping the cold metal of the stroller frame.

Noah and Lena were quiet now, sensing the tension in the air.

“Goodbye, Camille,” Adrian said.

He didn’t wait for her to answer.
