“Vance,” Isabella said into the receiver. “It’s me. We have a breach. I need the transport moved up to midnight.”
There was a pause as she listened to the voice on the other end.
I watched her expression shift from professional calm to slight unease.
“Are you sure?” Isabella asked, her brow furrowing. “The perimeter was supposed to be clear.”
She listened for another moment, then slowly lowered the phone.
“What did he say?” Adrian asked, standing up from the cot.
“He says there are extra patrols near the bridge,” Isabella said. “But he can still get a van to the west gate in two hours.”
She rubbed her temples, looking exhausted.
“He asked if you were still with me, Adrian,” she added.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Why would he ask that?”
“He said he wanted to make sure he brought a vehicle with enough room,” Isabella said, though she didn’t sound entirely convinced.
I looked at the children, who were now quiet, their bellies full as they began to drift off to sleep on the thin mattress.
Adrian walked back to them, gently pulling a wool blanket over Noah’s shoulders.
