He looked at the exit behind the stage.
But two more officers were already standing there, blocking the hallway.
“Harrison Ashford,” the lead detective said, his voice echoing in the quiet room.
“You are under arrest for bank fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny.”
The detective walked up the stairs of the stage.
Harrison looked at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of hatred and fear.
“You think you’ve won?” he whispered.
“This estate is drowning in debt. You’ll go bankrupt within a month.”
“The debt was created by your theft, Harrison,” I said.
“With the ten million returned, the estate is perfectly secure.”
“And your mother’s foundation will be dissolved by tomorrow morning.”
Beatrice moved toward Harrison, her heels clicking on the hardwood floor.
“Officer, there is a misunderstanding,” Beatrice said, her voice shaking.
“My son is a respected businessman.”
“We have the warrants, ma’am,” the detective said.
“And we have a warrant for you as well.”
Beatrice froze.
“For what?” she gasped.
“Conspiracy to commit fraud and obstruction of justice,” the detective said.
The officer stepped behind Harrison and pulled his hands behind his back.
