Harrison made a sound in his throat, a low growl of frustration.

“He showed me their ledgers,” I read, keeping my voice clear and loud.

“The Ashford Empire is a hollow shell, entirely bankrupt and buried under millions in debt.”

Sloane looked over at Harrison, her jaw dropping slightly.

“They targeted you, Vivian, solely for the Bennett Trust,” I read.

“They need your inheritance to pay off their foreign creditors and save their family name from ruin.”

I looked up from the paper.

Harrison was staring at me, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white.

“She was a dying woman,” Harrison said, his voice trembling. “She was losing her mind when she wrote that.”

“There is more,” I said, returning to the letter.

“I have hidden the original bank transfer requests and the forged signatures within my safe deposit box at the state bank,” I read.

“The key to that box is sewn into the hem of this very gown.”

Matteo reached down toward the hem, his fingers searching the heavy silk.

“Don’t touch her,” Harrison yelled, taking a step toward Matteo.
