“Harrison,” Dr. Marren whispered, stepping back.
“This is signed by Vance. It’s real.”
“I don’t care,” Harrison said, his voice turning desperate.
“She is hysterical. Look at her.”
“The only people behaving hysterically are in this family,” Grace said.
She turned her head slightly to look at Matteo and me.
“Vivian, we are leaving,” Grace said.
“Now.”
Matteo immediately stepped to my side, his hand guiding me toward the side door that led to the private study.
“Wait,” Beatrice called out, her voice sharp and commanding.
“You cannot leave this house with Bennett property.”
She was looking at the pocket of my coat where the letter was hidden.
“This house is my property,” I said, turning back to face her at the doorway.
“And so is everything in it.”
“We will see about that,” Harrison said, taking a step toward us.
But Grace stepped directly into his path, her tall frame blocking him.
“Touch her and I call the sheriff,” Grace said, her phone already in her hand.
Matteo opened the door to the study, and the smell of old leather and paper washed over us.
