The Inheritance Hidden in the Shadows of My Family Betrayal
“The bank accounts for the restaurant empire have been frozen and transferred back to your sole name.”
I walked over to the table and touched the smooth paper.
My name was printed in bold black ink at the top of the page.
“The Cumberland Avenue estate is officially yours now,” Daniel said.
“The deed has been re-recorded with the city registry.”
I looked around the dark kitchen, at the copper pots hanging from the ceiling and the stone fireplace.
This was the house where my father had plotted with Gavin to take my inheritance.
This was where my sister Brooke had stood beside my husband, laughing at my ignorance.
“Where are they taking them?” Evelyn asked, her voice flat.
“The county jail,” I said. “Then the state penitentiary, once the trial concludes.”
“They will not get bail,” Daniel added. “The flight risk was documented when they tried to use the private plane.”
Evelyn nodded once, her face expressionless.
“Helen always wanted this house,” Evelyn said, referring to my mother.
“She thought she could force me out and let Gavin run the business.”
“She was wrong,” I said.
