Documents and a sleek black laptop slid across the wet wood, stopping inches from the edge of the water.

Gavin scrambled for them.

I reached for the laptop first, my fingers brushing the cold metal casing.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated violently in my pocket.

A loud siren began to wail in the distance, growing closer by the second.

But it wasn’t coming from the highway.

It was coming from the water.

A harbor patrol boat emerged from the fog, its searchlight sweeping across the dock, blinding us both.

“Step away from the edge!” a voice boomed over a megaphone.

Gavin froze, his hand hovering over the laptop.

I looked at the water, then at the bright light shining directly on us.

In the glare, I saw another figure standing on the bow of the patrol boat.

It was Evelyn.

The searchlight held us in its cold, white beam.

The patrol boat nudged against the wooden pilings of the dock with a heavy, wet thud.

Evelyn stood tall on the bow, wearing a yellow slicker over her dark clothes.
