My phone buzzed in my pocket, the vibration loud in the quiet room.
I jumped, nearly dropping the papers.
I pulled it out.
It was a text from Daniel.
*Emily, where are you? I’ve been looking over the corporate charter.*
I typed back quickly, my thumbs clumsy on the screen.
*In the house on Cumberland. Arthur is helping Gavin. I found the transfer records. He mentioned something called First Star.*
A few seconds passed.
My phone lit up with an incoming call from Daniel.
I answered it, pressing the receiver tightly to my ear.
“Emily, get out of there,” Daniel whispered.
“I have the proof, Daniel,” I said, my voice cracking. “Arthur helped Gavin drain the flagship accounts. He’s driving the silver Volvo. He’s been watching me.”
“Did you say First Star?” Daniel asked.
