“They are going to raid this house under the guise of an illegal weapons search,” Julian said.

“They want these files, Claire. And they will destroy anything in their way to get them.”

I looked at Emma, who was still fast asleep, completely unaware of the danger.

“We have to leave,” I said.

“The roads are watched,” Julian said. “They have cruisers stationed at the state line.”

He stepped out into the hallway and called out.

“Margaret!” he shouted, his voice echoing down the limestone corridor.

Within seconds, the head housekeeper appeared from the shadows near the stairs.

Her uniform was immaculate, but her face was pale.

“Sir?” Margaret asked.

“The local authorities are coming,” Julian said. “They have a warrant signed by a compromised judge.”

Margaret didn’t flinch, but her hands tightened at her sides.

“I understand,” she said.

“Take Claire and the child to the basement pantry,” Julian said. “The one behind the wine cellar.”

“No,” I said, stepping forward. “I’m not hiding while they take the evidence.”

Julian turned to me, his grip on my shoulder firm and unyielding.
