The Hidden Truth in a Faded Blue Shirt That Saved My Family
“Thank you, Mrs. Latham,” I said, standing up and taking Nolan’s hand. “For everything.”
We walked out of the school together, the rain beginning to clear as a pale yellow light broke through the grey clouds over Knoxville.
Nolan held my hand tightly, his small fingers warm in mine.
As we reached Renee’s car, my phone in my coat pocket began to vibrate.
I pulled it out, expecting a call from my lawyer or perhaps my mother checking on us.

“Who is this?” I asked, my grip tightening on Nolan’s hand.
“This is Daniel,” the voice said. “Your ex-husband didn’t pay me for the last job, Claire. And I have something else he left in that blue shirt that you haven’t found yet.”
My breath stopped in my throat.
