“She made me do this!”

The office fell completely silent.

Only the sound of Grant’s heavy breathing filled the room.

I looked at him, feeling a strange mix of pity and relief.

He had finally shown his true colors to the one person who mattered.

Judge Harlan stared at Grant for a long time.

He didn’t look angry; he looked disgusted.

“You hid millions of dollars,” Judge Harlan said softly.

“You lied under oath.”

“And you used your own son as a shield.”

“I wanted him to have a good life,” Grant said, his voice cracking.

“With me.”

“Not with her.”

“You have no right to decide that by breaking the law,” Judge Harlan said.

The judge stood up and adjusted his glasses.

“We will resume in the courtroom in five minutes.”

“I suggest you prepare yourselves.”

We filed out of the office in silence.

Sarah squeezed my arm as we walked back down the hallway.

“That was his undoing, Claire,” she whispered.

“He just admitted to everything.”

“What will happen to Nolan?” I asked.

“We are going to get him back,” she said.
