“I am ordering an immediate recess until tomorrow morning,” Judge Harlan said. “During this time, the forensic accountant will complete a full review of Mr. Vance’s testimony and these bank records.”

He looked directly at Grant.

“And Mr. Bellamy, if any action is taken regarding the Shady Grove senior community between now and then, I will hold you in contempt of this court immediately,” the judge warned.

Grant did not move.

“We are adjourned,” Judge Harlan said.

We stood up as the judge left the bench.

Daniel was led out by his lawyer, still looking shaken and broken.

I turned to Sarah, a sudden wave of hope washing over me.

“We have him,” I whispered.

“We have the evidence,” Sarah said. “But we have to prepare for tomorrow. Carroway will try to tear Daniel’s credibility apart.”

We walked out of the courtroom and back into the main lobby.

The afternoon sun was starting to set, casting long, orange shadows across the marble floor.

As we reached the glass exit doors, my phone vibrated again.

It was a text from Mrs. Latham at Nolan’s school.
