The heavy door to the chambers opened behind us.

A bailiff entered, followed by Daniel.

Daniel looked pale, his tie slightly askew, his forehead slick with sweat.

He was accompanied by a lawyer I had never seen before, a stern-faced woman in a gray suit.

“Your Honor, I am Sandra Vance, representing Daniel Vance,” the woman said. “My client is here in response to the emergency subpoena.”

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Harlan said, leaning forward. “You understand you are under oath?”

“Yes, Your Honor,” Daniel said, his voice barely audible.

“We have reviewed the matching serial numbers from the cash straps found in Mrs. Bellamy’s possession,” Sarah said, turning to Daniel. “They match the accounts of your logistics firm, Vance Shipping.”
