“You will regret this, Alexander,” she whispered.

She turned and marched out of the room, her high heels clicking like gunfire against the floor.

In the private office, I let out a long, shaky breath.

It was over.

But through the glass, I saw Alexander’s face.

He didn’t look victorious.

He looked exhausted, his shoulders sagging slightly as the board members began to gather their papers and leave the room.

He turned his head and looked directly at the mirrored glass where I stood.

Suddenly, his phone, which was sitting on the boardroom table, lit up.

The screen flashed red with an incoming alert from his home security system.

My heart stopped.

The boys.

I pushed open the heavy glass door of the private office before I even realized I was moving.

My feet sank into the thick boardroom carpet as I hurried toward Alexander.

His fingers were already flying across the screen of his phone, his face pale under the fluorescent lights.

“What is it?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

He didn’t look up, his thumb tapping the glass twice to pull up the live security feed.
