“DNA results can be bought, altered, or forged,” she said. “Especially by people desperate for a piece of our family’s wealth.”

“And what about medical records?” Alexander asked.

He stepped forward, out of the shadows, until the blue light of the scanner illuminated his face.

He looked pale, but his eyes were burning.

“What about the fertility clinic records from eight years ago?” he asked.

For a fraction of a second, Victoria’s left eyelid flickered.

It was a tiny detail, but I saw it.

“I have no idea what you are talking about,” she said.

“The clinic received a three-million-dollar anonymous donation from an offshore account,” Alexander said. “An account registered to a shell company in the Cayman Islands.”

He held up the silver flash drive.

“An account that has your signature on the tax documents, Mother.”

Victoria’s gaze fixed on the small piece of metal in his hand.

“You have been digging through old trash,” she said. “It means nothing.”

“It means you bribed my doctor to tell me I was sterile,” Alexander said.

His voice finally cracked with a raw, deep anger.
