“Are you in a secure location?” Alexander asked, pulling a thick black binder from the safe.
“I am at my apartment, using an encrypted virtual private network,” Margaret said. “I’ve been going through the secondary transit accounts for Sterling Global.”
“Did you find the payments to Dr. Henderson?” Alexander asked.
Dr. Henderson was the fertility specialist who had signed the falsified medical reports seven years ago.
“Yes,” Margaret said. “But the paper trail didn’t start from Victoria’s personal bank accounts.”
Alexander stopped flipping through the binder. He froze. “What do you mean?”
“She didn’t use her own money to pay him off, Alexander,” Margaret explained. “She used the corporate accounts of Sterling Global’s charitable foundation.”
My breath caught in my throat. “She used charity funds?”
“Worse,” Margaret said. “She classified the payments as medical research grants.”
“That is tax fraud,” I whispered. “And embezzlement.”
“It is a federal crime,” Alexander corrected, his voice dangerously quiet. “If she used public corporate funds for private bribes, the board can legally strip her of everything.”
“Exactly,” Margaret said. “But we need the receiving end of those wires. The doctor’s private clinic accounts.”
