“Step back, sir,” the guard said to Nathan.

Johnny raised his phone higher, the red recording light flashing steadily.

“I’m getting every single face on camera,” Johnny said, his voice echoing off the vault walls.

The guard ignored him and reached for my arm.

Nathan stepped into the space between us, his broad shoulders blocking the guard’s reach.

The guard’s gloved hand caught Nathan’s jacket instead of my sleeve.

“Stand down,” Nathan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

The guard did not move his hand.

“Sir, my orders are to secure the documents,” the guard repeated.

His face was a mask of cold professionalism, but I saw a muscle twitch in his jaw.

“Your orders are illegal,” Nathan said.

“This is not corporate property.”

“This is a private legal document belonging to my wife.”

Eleanor took a step closer, her heels clicking like dry bones on the concrete floor.

“She is not your wife in the eyes of this family, Nathan,” Eleanor said.

“And she never will be.”

“Take it from her.”

The second guard stepped forward, his boots heavy and loud in the small space.
