He turned his head slowly to look at Rebecca.

Rebecca swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the cab driver, who was watching us in the rearview mirror.

“We need to discuss this in the office,” Rebecca said, her tone hushed.

“No,” Jonathan said, stepping away from the cab door but keeping his hand on the window glass. “We are going to discuss it right here.”

I saw the doubt beginning to take root in his eyes.

He looked at Rebecca’s face, really looked at her, perhaps for the first time in years.

“The fertility reports,” Jonathan said, his voice dropping to a whisper.

Rebecca flinched.

It was a tiny movement, barely noticeable, but I saw it.

“What about them?” Rebecca asked, her voice dry.

“The clinic in Zurich,” Jonathan said. “The one Harrison recommended.”

I watched them, my hand resting on Liam’s knee to keep him calm.

The twins were silent now, sensing the thick tension in the damp air.

“You told me it was physically impossible for me to have children,” Jonathan said.

“The doctors told you that, Jonathan,” Rebecca said, her defensive wall starting to crack. “Not me.”
