“Keep me updated,” Jonathan said, then ended the call without another word.

“What is it?” I asked, stepping closer to him. “Jonathan, what happened?”

He looked down at the phone, then slowly raised his eyes to meet mine.

“That was my contact in the legal department at the headquarters,” Jonathan said.

“And?” I asked, my heart pounding.

“Harrison’s personal attorneys spent the afternoon filing paperwork at the family court,” Jonathan said.

“What kind of paperwork?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.

“They are requesting an emergency custody hearing for Liam and Chloe,” Jonathan said, his voice cracking.

The room seemed to spin around me, the yellow lamplight blurring into streaks of light.

“He is trying to take them,” I whispered, my hand reaching for the edge of the table to steady myself.

“He is claiming that you are an unfit mother, living in an unsafe environment,” Jonathan said, his voice shaking with anger.

“This studio is their home,” I said, tears burning the back of my eyes.

“I know,” Jonathan said, grabbing my hands. “I know, Mariana.”
