“They’re kept in the private safe at the Vance offices in Midtown,” Benjamin said. “The one in Harrison’s personal study.”

“He’ll have security on that floor twenty-four hours a day,” Jonathan said, shaking his head.

“We don’t have twenty-four hours,” Benjamin said. “If he removes you tomorrow morning, your security credentials will be revoked immediately.”

The line went silent for a moment, the only sound the steady hum of the radiator.

Jonathan looked down at his silver key ring, his thumb tracing the edge of a small, brass electronic key.

“My key still works,” Jonathan said softly.

“Jonathan, no,” I said, stepping between him and the table. “It’s too dangerous. If Harrison catches you there, he’ll use it to destroy any chance we have.”

“If I do nothing, Mariana, he wins anyway,” Jonathan said, looking directly into my eyes.

He reached out and took my hand, his palm warm against my cold skin.

“I spent years letting him make the choices,” Jonathan said. “I let him drive you away because I was too afraid to lose the empire.”

He looked toward the hallway where the twins slept.
