“I know that now,” Vance said. “But on this drive, you’ll find the messages where they planned how to make you believe you were losing your mind.”
Daniel reached over and took the silver drive from the table.
He plugged it into his laptop.
The screen flickered, and a prompt for a decryption key appeared.
“The key is ‘HartLegacy2022’,” Vance said.
Daniel typed the password.
A directory of folders opened on the projector screen, labeled by month and year.
Daniel clicked on a folder from November of last year.
A PDF document opened. It was an email thread between Graham and Margaret.
I read the words on the wall.
“Claire is asking about the ledger again,” Graham had written. “She found the discrepancy in the Boston account.”
Margaret’s reply was sent three minutes later.
“Tell her she already authorized that transfer,” Margaret wrote. “Move the physical file to the attic safe. If she can’t find the paperwork, she will think she mislaid it. We need to keep her doubting her memory.”
