I stared at her. “Are you saying we can’t stop the filing?”

“Not through the courts before tomorrow morning,” Rachel said. “If that deed is recorded at 8:00 AM, the land belongs to Vance’s development company. He will have the bulldozers there by nine.”

“Then we don’t go to the courts first,” I said. “We go to the board.”

“They won’t want to hear it, Claire,” Rachel warned. “Most of them are old friends of Margaret’s. They trust her.”

“They won’t trust her when they see the money trail,” Daniel said.

He clicked on another window, revealing a spreadsheet with bright yellow highlights.

“I finished the tracing on the offshore account,” he said. “The five million dollars Graham took from the foundation didn’t go to a bad investment. It went directly into a shell company controlled by Sloane.”

“Sloane?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“The registry for that shell company lists her as the sole director,” Daniel said. “And the primary shareholder is Vance Harrison’s holding group.”

The pieces fell into place with a sickening clarity.

Graham hadn’t just stolen the money to run away with his mistress.
