“But Thomas will live.”

“That was the deal.”

I looked at Thomas.

He raised his eyes to meet mine.

“I’m sorry, Kiera,” he muttered.

“I was going to get us out.”

“I was going to buy the house in Florida.”

“Shut up, Thomas,” Marcus said without looking back.

“You were going to run.”

“But you aren’t smart enough for that.”

Marcus reached down and tore the yellow towel away from the ledger in my lap.

He picked up the heavy book.

He opened it, his fingers quickly flipping through the pages of names and numbers.

“Is this all of it?” Marcus asked Vance.

“She said she brought everything,” Vance replied.

Marcus looked at me, his eyes narrowing.

“Where are the deeds?” he asked.

“The land transfers for the north ridge?”

“They’re in there,” I lied.

“They’re in the back pocket of the cover.”

Marcus flipped to the back of the ledger.

There was nothing there.

His face darkened.

“Don’t play games with me, Kiera,” he said.

“I know Thomas had the deeds.”

“They were in the metal box.”

“Where are they?”
