“Your father has been stealing from my firm,” Daniel said.

“And I think you knew about it.”

Claire looked at the floor, unable to meet his eyes.

“Daniel, please,” she whispered.

“We can talk about this.”

Just then, Daniel’s phone buzzed in his hand.

It was a bright, violent flash in the dim room.

He looked down at the screen.

A new message from an unknown number appeared.

My father tapped the screen.

His thumb scrolled quickly through a document.

I leaned closer to his shoulder, trying to read the tiny text over his arm.

The blue light of the screen illuminated the sharp lines of his jaw.

“What is it, Dad?” I asked.

He didn’t answer me right away.

He just kept scrolling, his expression growing harder with every passing second.

“An anonymous tip,” he said, his voice flat. “Sent from a secure server.”

He turned the screen toward my mother and Martin.

On the display was a PDF containing a bank ledger with a foreign logo at the top.

“What am I looking at?” Martin blustered, though he did not step closer to look.
