“Good,” my father said.
“I’m heading to the office now. Keep a close eye on the bank accounts.”

My father hung up the phone and set it on the desk.
He walked over to the window and looked out at the driveway.
We watched my mother’s white SUV speed down the wet asphalt, splashing water onto the manicured lawn.
“She means it, Dad,” I said.
“She’s going to try to take the company.”
“She can try,” he said.
“But the law is on our side now.”
“What about the divorce papers?” I asked.

“Go pack some clothes, Sophie,” he said.
“We aren’t staying here tonight.”
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“A hotel near the office,” he said.
“It’s safer.”
