“He thinks you are dead, Grace,” Sabrina said, her voice trembling. “He still thinks you are buried in the snow somewhere.”

She held the recorder out further, her eyes pleading.

“I want immunity,” Sabrina said. “I will give you this file. I will testify against him in court.”

“But you have to promise your lawyers will protect me from the board,” she added. “They will try to ruin me too.”

“I can protect you from the board,” I said, stepping forward.

I reached out and took the silver recorder from her cold hand.

“But you must give me the original file,” I said. “Not just this copy.”

“I have a backup on a drive in my car,” Sabrina said. “You can have this one. Just promise me you won’t let him destroy me.”

“Ethan is finished,” I said, squeezing the metal device in my palm. “This is the end of his empire.”

Julian stared at the recorder, but his face did not clear.

A deep shadow of worry remained on his brow.

“We have to get this to the prosecutor tonight,” Julian said, stepping closer to the window. “We cannot wait for the board meeting tomorrow.”
