“But a dark sedan has been parked across the street for the last hour.”
My heart stopped for a beat.
“Did anyone try to get in?” I asked, looking out the side window at the passing bare trees.
“No, but they are watching the house,” she said. “I kept the deadbolt locked and the blinds drawn.”
“We’ll be there in five minutes,” I said and hung up.
I looked over at Julian, whose knuckles were white on the steering wheel.
“They’re watching the house,” I told him.
Julian cursed under his breath, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror.
“We need to get Sophie and get out of there,” Julian said.
“But where will we go?” I asked, feeling the panic rising in my throat again. “They have resources everywhere.”
Julian stared straight ahead at the gray asphalt.
“They think they have all the power because they have the company,” Julian said.
His voice was quiet, but there was a fierce intensity in it.
“But they built that company on a lie, Grace.”
I turned in my seat to look at him. “What do you mean?”
