“But you have to tell us the truth, and you have to do it now.”
Kenneth swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing.
“The money,” Kenneth whispered, looking at Charles.
“You promise the rest of the money?”
“I am a man of my word,” Charles said. “Tell her who that man is.”
Kenneth looked at me, then at the man behind the glass.
“He is your father,” Kenneth confessed, his voice cracking.
“Julian Bellamy brought him here twelve years ago.”
“We registered him under the false name of David Miller.”
“He was kept on the restricted ward under maximum security.”
My heart stopped.
“A false name,” I said, my voice shaking. “You hid him from us.”
“Bellamy paid the facility fifty thousand dollars a year to keep him dead to the world,” Kenneth said.
“They told us he was a dangerous vagrant with no living relatives.”
“But I found his real driver’s license in his coat pocket on his first day.”
“I knew he was Arthur Pendelton.”
“I knew he had a daughter.”
