“Evelyn,” Carter said. “We have Grant in custody at the field office. Vanessa is being treated for a shoulder injury under guard.”
“I have more evidence,” I said.
“What did you find?”
“Vanessa had a storage drive and a ledger in her bag,” I said. “It contains the routing numbers for the offshore accounts.”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line.
“That changes the speed of the asset seizure,” Carter said. “The federal prosecutor is already drawing up the paperwork.”
“Include the kidnapping charges,” I said. “And the embezzlement of my family trust.”
“We have enough to freeze everything they own, Evelyn.”
“Do it quickly,” I said. “I want them to have nothing left for legal fees.”
I hung up and sat back down on Lily’s bed.

She did not make a sound, but she pointed to the plastic cup of water on the bedside table.
I poured the water and held the straw to her lips.
She took a few small sips, then rested her head against my chest.
