Outside, Harris approached the open doors of the ambulance.
He held a secure digital tablet in his hand.
“The field office just ran the preliminary scan on the backup drive we recovered from Grant’s coat pocket,” Harris said.
“And?” I asked.
“It contains the entire transaction history for the dummy corporations Vanessa set up in Panama,” Harris said. “The wire transfers match the missing funds from your estate, dollar for dollar.”
“Is it enough?” I asked.
“It’s more than enough,” Harris said. “The Assistant U.S. Attorney is already drafting the paperwork.”
I looked down at Lily, who was tracing the pattern on the wool blanket with her index finger.
“They’re going to face federal charges,” I said, wanting to hear the words aloud.
“Child endangerment, embezzlement, interstate kidnapping, and conspiracy,” Harris confirmed. “The conspiracy charge alone carries a heavy minimum sentence because of Vanessa’s foreign accounts.”
“They won’t get bail,” I said.
“Not with their flight risk and the foreign assets,” Harris said. “They’re going to a federal holding facility tonight.”
I felt a slight release of the tension in my chest, but it wasn’t complete.
