I didn’t blink.

I kept my front sight post aligned with the sliver of Vanessa’s head showing behind Lily.

“The keys won’t save you, Grant,” I said.

“The tactical team already has the offshore routing numbers.”

“They intercepted your server in Denver ten minutes ago.”

Grant’s face fell.

He looked at the laptop screen, his fingers hovering.

“You’re lying,” he whispered.

“Try the recovery key,” I said.

“See what happens.”

He turned back to the keyboard, frantically typing a sequence.

Vanessa snarled.

“He’s a fool, Evelyn, but I am not,” she said.

She nudged Lily forward, using the child to push past a heavy metal tool cart.

“Move, Lily,” Vanessa muttered, her voice cold.

Lily stumbled, her small boots sliding on a patch of frozen grease.

She gasped, a tiny, muffled sound behind the tape.

My knuckles turned white around the grip of my Glock.

“One more step, Vanessa,” I said.

“I don’t want to do this in front of her.”

“You won’t do anything,” Vanessa said.

“Because you’re a mother first, and an agent second.”

“That was always your weakness.”
