My team was twenty minutes out, delayed by the sudden blizzard.

I couldn’t wait for backup.

I had to separate Lily from Vanessa before they reached the tarmac.

I stepped out from behind the crates, keeping my weapon raised and aligned with Grant’s chest.

“Step away from the laptop, Grant,” I said.

My voice was calm, carrying clearly over the roar of the engines.

Grant gasped, dropping a stack of documents onto the floor.

He stumbled backward, his hands flying into the air.

“Evelyn!” he stammered, his face turning pale in the harsh fluorescent light.

“How did you—how are you here?”

“Shut up,” I said, my eyes scanning the stairs leading up to the office.

“Tell Vanessa to bring Lily down.”

Grant looked toward the office door, his eyes darting frantically.

“Evelyn, please, let’s talk about this,” he pleaded, his voice trembling.

“It was all Vanessa’s idea, I swear.”

“She made me do it.”

“She said we could start over, but she’s the one who wanted the money.”

“You’re a pathetic coward, Grant,” I said, keeping my target locked on his center mass.
