“She called me,” I said. “About fifteen minutes ago.”

“We know,” Harris said. “We traced the burner phone.”

“She was desperate,” he added. “Her brother is already in custody downtown.”

“What about Victoria?” I asked.

“Victoria is being held without bail,” Harris said.

“The federal judge saw the ledger copies and realized the scale of the fraud.”

“She is considered a severe flight risk,” he said.

He opened the folder and handed me a document.

It was a signed declaration from the United States Attorney’s office.

“This protects your daughter’s trust from any immediate civil seizure,” Harris explained.

“Since the funds were legally cleared of the fraud, her inheritance is secure.”

I touched the thick paper with my fingertips.

My daughter’s legal name, Maya Callahan, was printed at the top of the page.

“Thank you, Investigator,” I said.

“I couldn’t have done this without your help.”

“You brought us the evidence, Mrs. Callahan,” Harris said.

He stood up and adjusted his coat.

“We just did our jobs. You should get some rest now.”

He tipped his hat and walked out of the room.
