The False Heir and the Ledger of the Callahan Family Empire
“Please tell the officer outside that I just received a threatening call,” I said.
“He needs to notify Investigator Harris immediately.”
“I’ll let him know right away,” she said.
I looked down at my daughter.
She was sleeping soundly in her clear plastic bassinet.
Her tiny chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm.
Ten minutes passed.
The clock on the wall ticked past 11:00 AM.
My phone buzzed again in my hand.
I looked at the screen and saw Adelaide’s name.
I swiped to answer.
“Adelaide?” I asked.
“The deputy just walked into the boardroom,” Adelaide said.
Her voice was trembling slightly with excitement.
“He handed the certified copy of the ledger directly to the chairman,” she said.
“What is Victoria’s lawyer doing?” I asked.
“He tried to object,” Adelaide said.
“He claimed the document was stolen property and inadmissible under our bylaws.”
“And the chairman?”
“The chairman told him to sit down,” Adelaide said.
“He said the board will not be complicit in federal identity theft and fraud.”
I leaned my head back against the pillow.
I closed my eyes, listening to the distance in her voice.
