“Keep me updated,” I said.

“I will,” she said, standing up.

“I’m going to go see the baby now.”

“Tell her I love her,” I said.

Adelaide smiled gently.

“I will.”

She walked out of the room, leaving me alone with Agent Harris.

Harris pulled up a chair and sat down.

“We’ve been interviewing Julian Vance,” Harris said.

“He’s singing like a bird.”

“Is he?” I asked.

“He’s trying to cut a deal,” Harris said.

“He’s blaming Victoria for the entire identity theft.”

“She was the brain,” I said.

“He was just the face.”

“He claims Victoria had a contact inside the registry office,” Harris said.

“Someone who helped falsify the birth certificate.”

“Did he give you a name?” I asked.

“Not yet,” Harris said.

“He’s holding that back for a plea bargain.”

“Don’t give him one,” I said.

“He took my husband’s life, his identity.”

“The prosecutor isn’t inclined to be soft on him,” Harris said.

“The public outrage is too high.”

He stood up and adjusted his jacket.

“Get some rest, Natalie,” Harris said.

“You’ve earned it.”

“Thank you, Agent Harris,” I said.
