I saw Agent Miller sitting behind the desk.

She looked up and gave me a professional, reassuring smile.

“Mrs. Callahan,” she said. “Please have a seat. The doctor will see you shortly.”

I sat in a green vinyl chair in the corner of the waiting room.

I picked up a parenting magazine, but the words blurred together.

Every time the glass entry doors slid open, my muscles tensed.

A woman with a small child walked in.

An elderly man with a cane followed.

At nine-fifty, my phone buzzed in my purse.

A text message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

*I’m in the building. Service elevator.*

I looked at Agent Miller.

She caught my eye and nodded slightly, reaching for her earpiece.

She knew the target was close.

A nurse came out and called my name.

“Natalie Callahan?”

I stood up, my legs feeling heavy and weak.

I followed the nurse down the narrow, brightly lit hallway.

The walls were painted a pale, depressing blue.

“Room Three,” she said, opening the door.

“Change into the gown, and Dr. Evans will be right in.”
