The Fall of the Caldwell Dynasty and the Restored Legacy of Whitaker House
“Thank you all for coming,” Marcus said.
“We are here today to mark a new beginning for the Whitaker Foundation.”
“For thirty years, this institution served this city under the guidance of our founder, Evelyn Whitaker.”
“Today, we return to that mission, free from the personal interests that briefly threatened to destroy it.”
He turned his head toward me.
“I would like to introduce the woman who made this restoration possible, Emma Whitaker.”
There was a warm round of applause.
I walked up to the small wooden podium, my heart beating steadily.
I looked out at the faces of the people who had supported my mother’s work for decades.
“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, my voice clear.
“And thank you all for your patience during these difficult months.”
“The Whitaker Foundation was built on trust.”
“That trust was broken, and for that, I am deeply sorry.”
“But today, we have taken steps to ensure that it can never be broken again.”
“We have established a new, fully independent governing board.”
“The assets of this foundation have been placed beyond the reach of any single individual, including myself.”
