“We need to conclude this meeting,” Lorna said, her voice rising above the alarm. “Now.”
She looked at Arthur, then at the other two board members sitting at the far end of the table.
“I call for an emergency motion,” Lorna said.
“State it,” Arthur replied.
“I move that the board immediately strip Grant Caldwell, Helen Caldwell, and any affiliated designees of all voting rights, administrative privileges, and oversight capacities within the Whitaker House Foundation,” Lorna said.
“Seconded,” Arthur said without hesitation.
Grant took a step toward Lorna, his fists clenched at his sides.
“You can’t do this,” Grant hissed. “My mother built the alliances on this board.”
“Your mother bought silence, Grant,” Lorna said. “But the money has run out, and so has our patience.”
“All those in favor of the motion to strip the Caldwell family of all rights,” Marcus announced, acting in his capacity as estate counsel.
Lorna raised her hand high.
Arthur raised his hand.
The remaining two board members, who had sat in terrified silence for the past hour, slowly raised their hands as well.
