“These are the chief financial regulators from the state treasury,” Marcus said.
The taller of the two men stepped forward, pulling a gold-sealed document from his portfolio.
“Mr. Caldwell,” the man said.
“We are here to serve a temporary restraining order on the assets of the Whitaker House Foundation.”
“You can’t do this,” Grant said, his hands beginning to shake.
“The board is about to vote.”
“The board cannot vote on the dissolution of a frozen entity,” the regulator replied.
Grant looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of rage and desperation.
“You’re destroying everything, Emma,” he whispered.
“No, Grant,” I said, holding up the USB drive.
“I am saving it.”
He lunged forward, his hand reaching for the drive.
Marcus stepped between us, pushing Grant back.
“Don’t make this worse for yourself, Grant,” Marcus said.
The elevator doors behind Grant began to close, but he blocked them with his arm.
He stepped back into the cab and hit the button for the top floor.
“This isn’t over,” he yelled as the doors slid shut.
“He’s going to the boardroom,” Lorna said.
