“Emma, where are you?” he asked.

“I’m in the lobby at Whitaker House,” I said.

“Helen just showed me a fifteen-year-old document with my father’s signature.”

I described the clause authorizing the transfer of assets to the Caldwell holding company.

There was a long silence on the line.

“I have the master file right here in my office,” Marcus said.

“That clause was rejected in the final draft, Emma.”

“Are you sure?” I asked, a wave of relief washing over me.

“Positively,” Marcus said.

“The document Helen has must be the preliminary draft, or a clever forgery.”

“But she’s using it to blackmail me into staying quiet,” I said.

“And Grant is calling an emergency vote to liquidate the assets today.”

“He’s panicking,” Marcus said.

“He knows the forensic audit is nearly complete.”

“We need to stop that vote,” I said.

“I am on my way to Lorna’s office now,” Marcus said.

“But we need more than just my word on the legal drafts.”

“What about Vanessa?” I asked.

“She has the communications logs and the dual-signature authorization codes,” Marcus said.

“If she talks, Grant’s defense crumbles.”
