“I went to Grant’s office to find the finalized quarterly reports,” she said, her eyes wide. “He left his laptop open, and his desk calendar was turned to tomorrow’s date.”
“The board meeting,” I said.
“It is not a budget review,” she said, shaking her head quickly. “They have drafted a complete restructuring proposal.”
She opened the envelope and pulled out a document with the official foundation letterhead.
“They are presenting an internal audit to the board tomorrow morning,” she said, pushing the paper toward me. “An audit they spent the last week fabricating.”
I picked up the document, my eyes scanning the rows of numbers.
The name of Vanessa’s consulting firm was highlighted in yellow ink next to a series of unauthorized digital transfers.
“They are accusing me of embezzling over two million dollars from the main account,” she said, her chest rising and falling rapidly.
“How could they prove that?” I asked. “You don’t have access to the transfer keys.”
