My mother had ordered a commercial-grade safe to be hidden inside her home just weeks before her death.

I looked at the date on the work order.

It was dated October fourteenth.

That was three days before she was admitted to the hospital for the last time.

And the receipt was marked *Paid in Full* by Margaret Whitaker.

I looked up from the paper, my breath catching in my throat.

Grant was watching me, his eyes tracking the movement of my hands.

He didn’t know what was on that paper, but he knew it was dangerous to him.

“Emma,” Helen said, her voice cutting through my thoughts. “Do you have something to add to Arthur’s report?”

“Not yet,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt.

I slid the Bay Street paper under a stack of bank statements.

“We should look at the December disbursements first,” I said.

“Those have already been cleared by the committee,” Grant said quickly.

“They were cleared based on forged signatures, Grant,” Lorna said.

Arthur tapped his pen on the table. “That is a very serious accusation, Lorna.”
